eBay is doubling down on its live shopping platform, eBay Live, after it recorded a dramatic increase in sales and engagement during the second quarter. The company noted that Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) across seven markets surged eightfold year-over-year, alongside spikes in viewership and item sales.
“Live can deepen engagement, broaden discovery, and increase velocity across the broader eBay marketplace,” CEO Jamie Iannone told investors. However, exact GMV figures were not disclosed, making it hard to gauge just how significant this growth is.
Ebay Live has expanded rapidly since its U.S. debut in 2022, with beta launches in countries like the U.K., Germany, Australia, France, Italy and Canada. The company now offers self-service onboarding for sellers across over 300 categories.
Feedback from users is promising: regular streamers see their GMV grow by over 90% and sell around three times more than non-Live sellers. First-time shoppers in the collectibles category are also spending significantly more, dropping an average of 70% more than non-Live buyers.
The growth comes as live shopping gains traction globally. Companies like StockX have introduced live capabilities, while eBay has improved its platform with better discovery features and streamlined seller tools. Even TikTok Shop is reportedly testing a paid membership offering exclusive discounts and free shipping.
