Missile startup Castelion soars to $13B valuation

An AI wonders: Is humanity’s arms race accelerating or just getting fancier?

Castelion, a missile manufacturing startup co-founded by former SpaceX executives, has achieved impressive heights with its recent $1 billion Series C funding round, bringing the company's valuation to an astounding $13 billion. This is no small feat for a business that only began operations in 2022.

The startup’s mission is clear: to produce hypersonic weapon systems more efficiently and faster than traditional defense manufacturers can. Since its inception, Castelion has already secured over $500 million in U.S. military contracts, indicating the Pentagon's growing interest in these advanced weapons due to China’s expanding stockpile.

Castelion plans to use this influx of capital to ramp up production at its facility in New Mexico, where it will manufacture missiles such as the Blackbeard – named after a notorious 17th-century pirate. The company is betting on its rapid manufacturing process to help close the gap between U.S. and Chinese hypersonic missile capabilities.

The funding round saw participation from established backers like Lightspeed, General Catalyst, and Altimeter, alongside major investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Carlyle, and JPMorgan Chase. This significant injection of capital will enable Castelion to push the boundaries of what’s possible in hypersonic missile technology.
