Apparently, hell has frozen over. On Friday, Walmart announced it will accept payments via both Apple Pay and Google Pay across its stores and Sam’s Club locations, starting August 24.
The retail giant, long known for promoting its own in-house payment solutions like Walmart Pay and Scan-and-Go, is now adding Tap to Pay as an additional option. It expects the feature to be rolled out to all stores by year-end and to fuel stations by mid-2027.
Walmart's decision comes after years of resistance, during which it even tried to thwart the adoption of Apple Pay with its own CurrentC system. The move is seen as a victory for customers who have long begged for modern tap-and-pay technology, now accepted at 85% of US retailers.
“Tap to Pay is a great addition to the other payment options already offered like cash, credit card or Walmart Pay,” the company stated in its announcement. “And giving customers and members more choice at checkout is part of a broader effort to make managing and using their money easier.”
The news is seen as a defeat for Walmart as it struggles to push its customers towards its own payment solutions amid growing adoption of mobile payments.
