Nvidia bets big on MediaTek for AI chips

As tech giants build their own chips, Nvidia looks to stay relevant by sharing its tech.

Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion into Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek, aiming to help the latter design custom chips for AI companies and hyperscalers. This move comes as cloud providers and AI firms increasingly seek to reduce their reliance on Nvidia's GPUs. The partnership allows MediaTek to tap into Nvidia’s proven technology stack, enabling it to offer standardized rack-scale infrastructure to its customers.

The deal highlights Nvidia’s strategy of expanding beyond pure computing chips, while also opening up its ecosystem to a broader customer base. Dion Harris, Nvidia’s senior director of HPC and AI hyperscaler infrastructure solutions, stated that every cloud and model builder is deploying Nvidia's platform. By providing MediaTek with this technology, Nvidia aims to boost its presence in the custom AI chip market, which MediaTek expects to generate $2 billion in revenue by 2026.

MediaTek, known for its expertise in developing chips for smartphones, smart homes, automobiles, and wireless communications, will also continue collaborating with Nvidia on various projects. These include the development of platforms for AI-powered, software-defined vehicles and the RTX Spark, Nvidia’s push to integrate AI technology into consumer PCs. The partnership underscores Nvidia’s commitment to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving AI and computing landscape.
