Designing Epic Boss Battles Without the Fake 3D Look

Thomas Bourdon shares his process, revealing how early design and subtle 2D touches can make a game scene truly captivating.

How I created an epic dragon vs warrior boss battle scene for an art contest, focusing on early design and subtle 2D touches to avoid a fake 3D look. I started with a 3D model, then used Blender to block out the scene, and finally added 2D elements like brushstrokes and painterly effects in Photoshop to polish the image.

By defining the design early, I could focus on storytelling through mood, colours and composition, ensuring the final result was as epic as possible. The key is to blend 3D and 2D elements seamlessly to achieve a natural look.

With the right tools and approach, anyone can create stunning visuals that feel both real and magical, bringing boss battles to life without relying on a 'fake' 3D look.
