After a five-year development journey, Free Stars: Children of Infinity, the official sequel to The Ur-Quan Masters, has released a free public demo. This 'combat demo' allows players to assemble a fleet from the game’s impressive roster of nearly 40 ships, each with its own unique maneuvering characteristics, weapons, and special abilities, and engage in head-to-head SpaceWar-style action. The demo has landed on Steam and GOG, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with console versions on the horizon. As a volunteer contributor to the writing team, I’ve been part of this project since 2021, adding NPC dialogue and story bits. All familiar ships from The Ur-Quan Masters are present, alongside new faces and melee-only ships designed by Kickstarter backers, making a total of 38 different ships to clash in the combat sandbox. The demo is a testament to the enduring appeal of this space adventure RPG, and with the full game eventually due for release, many are eager to see where this journey will take us.
