People who are frustrated with Flock Safety’s automated license plate readers can now vent their anger in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Artist Morry Kolman has created a mod called Grand Theft Automated License Plate Reader (GTPLR), which installs 235 Flock cameras around the fictional Los Santos. Players can destroy these cameras and earn $600 for each one, reflecting the real-world cost of a Flock Falcon Flex Camera, according to Iowa’s Eyes Off of Cedar Rapids group.

In reality, Flock cameras have faced vandalism in 36 states, with vigils and protests against their use. GTA V’s mod doesn’t endorse such activities, but it does offer a cathartic release, according to Kolman. The cameras also affect gameplay, prolonging the game’s cooldown period and sometimes triggering random police responses, mirroring real-world inaccuracies.

Flock did not respond to the article’s request for comment. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department has suspended the use of Flock cameras, and there have been terminations of Flock contracts across the US. The mod aims to highlight the pervasiveness of surveillance, according to Kolman, rather than just highlighting its negatives.

The long-awaited sequel, Grand Theft Auto VI, is set for a November release, and it remains to be seen if there will be a version of GTPLR for it. The mod offers a unique way to explore the issues surrounding surveillance, making the abstract concept of pervasive technology real and tangible for players.
