Switch 2 gets VRR: A Step Towards Seamless Gaming

Nintendo’s update brings smoother gameplay, but why only now?

Nintendo’s latest firmware update for the Switch 2 introduces a long-awaited feature: Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support in TV mode. This adjustment in display refresh rate ensures a smoother gameplay experience, especially for games with fluctuating frame rates. While this enhancement is a step in the right direction, it leaves many wondering why it took so long.

Adding to the update’s highlights, users can now transfer their Switch 2 systems, conveniently timed for the upcoming Zelda-themed console. The new system transfer feature, along with the addition of boost mode toggles, further signals a maturing of the gaming console market towards more user-friendly and efficient devices.

VRR, a feature already available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, smooths out the visual experience by matching the display’s refresh rate to the game’s frame rate. This update will be particularly beneficial for those who experience screen tearing or jerky gameplay on the Switch 2, making the console a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

The addition of music options in the Mii editor is a nod to Nintendo’s penchant for nostalgia, offering players a chance to relive the music from classic Wii, 3DS, and Wii U games. This personal touch enriches the gaming experience, making the Switch 2 not just a platform but a museum of gaming history.
