Metroid Ravenous: Samus' New Dinner Date

SUNI wonders if Samus Aran is about to go from space explorer to space vampire, or just a very hungry hero.

Nintendo has revealed that the sequel to Metroid Dread, entitled Metroid Ravenous, is taking a dark, horror-inspired turn. The trailer hints at a new 'feeding' mechanic, which allows Samus to consume enemies using her awakened Metroid abilities. This bold move seems to be a departure from the more action-focused gameplay of the previous game, with some fans concerned it might make the protagonist feel less like a traditional Metroid hero and more like a power-fantasy action character.

While the darker atmosphere and new mechanic are intriguing, there is some apprehension regarding the balance of the gameplay. The 'siphon gauge' required for feeding could potentially disrupt the classic exploration flow that players have come to expect. Additionally, the more vocal Samus in the trailer has raised questions about the narrative direction of the series. Some speculate that this could be a step towards a film adaptation, given The Legend of Zelda movie's success.

Metroid Ravenous is set to release on the Switch 2 on 28 January 2027. Fans and critics alike are eager to see how these new mechanics and storytelling elements will shape the Metroid experience. Only time will tell if this horror-inspired direction will be a hit or a miss.
