Sony is rolling out a new AI upscaling technology, called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), to enhance graphics on the regular PS5. The technology is first being implemented in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
According to Sony, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro remains the benchmark for high-quality graphics. However, QSSR, due to the absence of dedicated machine learning silicon, is expected to deliver closer to 1440p resolution on the PS5, rather than the 4K resolution seen on the PS5 Pro. Sony’s principal graphics R&D engineer, Daniel Craig, noted that on the PS5, teams must be more flexible, adjusting both render resolution and presentation targets.
Despite the limitations, Craig indicated that QSSR can be a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR after minimal tuning. Sony has stated that the technology will be made available to all PlayStation developers, with the first beneficiaries being Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both titles will receive patches today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on the PS5.
The potential for QSSR is significant, as it could address the issue of low-resolution and poor upscaling that has affected many titles in this generation. However, players should not expect a full 4K experience on the regular PS5.
