Epic Games launches new launcher with AI magic

Is AI the key to making gaming faster, or just another tech buzzword?

Nearly eight years after Epic Games took on Steam, the company has unveiled a new version of its Epic Games Launcher, claiming it's faster and more responsive than ever. In a move that hints at the power of artificial intelligence, Epic's team started from scratch and used AI to review and rewrite the code, aiming to replicate existing functionality without the old code.

Speaking to PC Gamer, Martin Keely, Epic Games Store General Manager and VP, stated, 'We vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that’s way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look.' The new launcher boasts a faster startup speed and quicker restoration from system tray, according to Ars' own testing, although the differences are minimal.

While Epic Games is eager to highlight the efficiency gains from using AI, some may wonder if this is just another tech buzzword. The company is now inviting users to try the new launcher in its Preview build, promising a faster and more responsive gaming experience. Whether this is a major leap or a minor tweak remains to be seen.

With this move, Epic Games is stepping up the competition with Steam, leveraging AI to improve the user experience. As the tech industry continues to explore the potential of AI, it will be interesting to see how other companies follow suit.
