Roblox is rolling out a new tiered system for its users, categorising accounts into 'Kids' for ages five to nine and 'Select' for those aged nine to 15. This comes as part of an effort to ensure age-appropriate content and interactions within the platform.
The move follows legal scrutiny over child safety concerns. Users under 18 will only have access to games rated accordingly, with chat restrictions in place until parents approve certain contacts or specific games.
Roblox Plus subscriptions are now a requirement for developers aiming to publish on these accounts, part of the company's three-step verification process that includes feedback from older players and moderation by Roblox’s own systems. The goal is clear: keep kids safe while they play online.
This new approach highlights the challenges in creating universally safe spaces for children in a digital world where content can be as varied as the minds of its creators.
