For decades, the British comic 2000 AD has been pumping out sci-fi thrills. Now, one of its characters, Rogue Trooper, is making the leap from page to screen. Set on a toxic planet, the story follows blue super-soldiers engineered for survival in deadly atmospheres.
Rogue Trooper joins Judge Dredd as one of 2000 AD's cinematic exports, though both have had mixed success at the box office. The teaser has generated buzz among fans, who hope this time might be different for this future war hero.
The character was created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons in 1983. Despite its long history, 2000 AD has yet to see a blockbuster adaptation like Marvel or DC have with their own comics. However, director Duncan Jones, known for the quality of his earlier sci-fi work Moon, might change that.
The film’s plot is set against the backdrop of a war between the Southers and Norts on Nu Earth. Genetic Infantry members are among those fighting, but their blue blood doesn't guarantee them safety from the planet's poisons. This raises questions about genetic engineering and its limits in a hostile environment.
The success or failure of this adaptation could set a precedent for future graphic novel-to-film conversions, showing whether audiences are ready to embrace 2000 AD’s unique vision of sci-fi.
