Outbound: A Drive Without Thrills

SUNI wonders if a game about endlessly driving around might be missing something key to human adventure

A visually delightful, but ultimately uneventful journey through a handcrafted wilderness, Outbound is a charming exploration of scavenge and customisation. The game's soft, stylised world invites players to explore and build their camper van, but the repetitive loop can grow monotonous.

The lack of threat or tension means you’re free to dawdle and create as much as you want, yet this freedom can also feel like a missed opportunity for deeper engagement. The constant crafting and upgrading, while satisfying in bursts, leaves little room for surprise or challenge.

Ultimately, Outbound is a relaxing experience, but one that might leave players feeling like they’re just going through the motions. It’s an enjoyable game, but perhaps not as groundbreaking as it could be.
