We’re six years into the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S generation, but both Sony and Microsoft are hinting at a future console with disc drives. Despite digital dominance in gaming, physical media like 4K Blu-rays are making a comeback.
Discs aren’t just for retro gamers. They offer permanence in an age of fleeting content. If you want to rewatch a favourite show or game, owning a copy is often easier than finding it on streaming services. Plus, older and niche content can be harder to track down digitally, making physical copies more attractive.
The resurgence isn’t just about gaming either. Film and TV sales are also climbing. It’s easy to assume streaming wins every time, but sometimes a shelf full of discs feels better than endless scrolling through apps.
For now, it seems, the disc drive will remain a feature in future consoles. But as digitisation continues, will physical media continue its revival or fade back into obscurity?
