Nintendo has announced that the upcoming Switch 2, set to launch in Europe by February 2027, will feature a replaceable battery. This move aligns with new EU regulations mandating user-replaceable batteries for various gadgets, including portable game consoles.
According to Nintendo's website, future compliant versions of the Switch 2 will have unique model numbers and an ‘OSM’ code on their packaging, marking them as separate products for regulatory purposes. The company hasn’t yet detailed exactly how battery replacements will be simplified compared to the current multi-step process.
While this is a step forward in making gadgets more sustainable, it remains unclear whether other regions will follow suit or if models like the Pro Controller and Joy-Cons will also feature replaceable batteries. Nintendo has not responded to inquiries regarding these specifics.
The comeback of user-replaceable batteries is part of a broader trend towards more repairable devices, thanks to EU regulations that aim to reduce e-waste. Whether this will lead to more DIY gadget fixes or just another product update remains to be seen.
