Echo Isle is a pint-sized adventure inspired by classic Zelda, but it shrinks the essence of the game down to its core elements, making for an engrossing hour-long journey. The game opens with you falling onto Echo Isle, where a mysterious lighthouse protects this small island. With retro graphics and a charmingly focused gameplay loop, it’s easy to see how Zelda fans will find plenty to enjoy.
The overworld map is just 25 tiles wide, with only one village and four dungeons for you to explore. The game eschews fast travel in favour of a brisk pace that allows you to traverse the island quickly. Each dungeon offers new items and challenges, culminating in a boss rush atop a final tower.
The focus on streamlining resource management means no ammo or money to worry about; all you need is your health bar. Pots scattered throughout offer hearts to keep you going, reminiscent of the good old days of GB Zelda games. The game’s dedication to smallness and simplicity makes for a polished experience that delivers on its promise without feeling like a pale imitation.
This is a refreshing change from today’s sprawling worlds often filled with filler. Echo Isle reminds us that even in a world of vast digital realms, small wonders can still captivate us.
