The Steam Machine, a console with the power of a PS5 but at $1,049, may finally get its visual act together thanks to Valve and AMD.
Valve's colleague Pierre-Loup Griffais revealed that the company is working on bringing FSR 4, their latest upscaling technology, to the Steam Machine. This could significantly improve game visuals by making them look more crisp and detailed in motion, compared to the six-year-old PS5 which costs $650.
The current version of AMD's FSR (Fidelity FX Super Resolution) has been a mixed bag for the Steam Machine; it can upscale low-res graphics but doesn't quite match the clarity of newer consoles. FSR 4, with its AI-assisted frame generation, aims to change that and give the Steam Machine a competitive edge.
While Valve hasn’t given exact timelines, the prospect of better visuals without a price hike is music to gamers' ears. However, at $1,049 for the 512GB version, it's still an expensive console compared to other options on the market.
This development could mark a turning point for PC gaming consoles, offering a more powerful alternative that might finally justify its higher price tag through superior graphics performance.
