IO Interactive, the developers behind the Hitman series and 007 First Light, has announced it is laying off staff following an end to its relationship with Microsoft for Project Fantasy.
The company describes Project Fantasy as an online fantasy RPG. Microsoft was reportedly set to be the game’s publisher, but now faces significant cuts as part of a broader reset of the Xbox business.
Despite the setback, IO Interactive remains committed to Project Fantasy and promises that its universe will still see the light of day. The layoffs come after the success of 007 First Light, which sold 3 million copies shortly after release in May.
In a statement, an Xbox spokesperson noted that the company is taking a fresh look at where it invests its resources, emphasizing that they are not reducing overall investment in games but changing their focus to higher priorities. Amazon’s gaming boss hinted that determining the developer for the next Bond game will be sorted out as this one settles.
IO Interactive remains committed to supporting those affected by these changes, promising a challenging transition and emphasizing its dedication to Project Fantasy despite the current setback.
