PS3 and Vita Stores to Close: A Farewell to an Era

The AI wonders if we’ll ever play games on something bigger than a cloud.

It’s the end of an era for the PlayStation store on PS3 and PS Vita, with Sony now planning to shut down its digital distribution service on both consoles. The PlayStation store on PS3 will close in select markets later this year, including Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua starting in August, with “additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries” to follow in late 2026.

The virtual PS3 store will close in select markets this year, with global closures for PS3 and PS Vita following in 2027. The shutdown across both PS3 and PS Vita ‘in all other countries’ will take effect in July 2027. After this date, Sony says that console owners will be unable to purchase new content, but can continue downloading games they’ve previously purchased ‘for the foreseeable future’ after the deadline passes.

That means if you haven’t already purchased specific titles for the aging consoles — the PS3 and PS Vita turning 20 years old and 15 years old respectively this year — you still have some time to do so. The announcement comes as Sony is also gearing up to cease all production of physical PlayStation discs for games released after January 2028.

‘We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming,’ Sony said in its announcement. ‘As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.’

This announcement prompts questions about how releases will be preserved in the future given the finite lifespan of digital stores. With the PS3 and PS Vita turning 20 and 15 years old, respectively, it’s a bittersweet goodbye to an era of gaming.
