Microsoft is reportedly testing a disc-to-digital feature for their next-gen consoles, allowing owners to digitize their existing physical game collections.
The feature will work on Xbox One and Series X discs but not those from earlier consoles like the 360 or original Xbox. A Microsoft account is required to install and play the games, which will grant a digital entitlement tied to the specific disc.
For titles available on Xbox Cloud Gaming and with a Game Pass subscription, you can stream them. If they’re an Xbox Play Anywhere title, you’ll also be able to access them on your PC or handheld device.
The feature works with bundled discs and multi-disc titles, providing access to all the content usually offered by these discs. However, some newer discs may not work due to manufacturing specifics.
For existing Xbox owners concerned about transitioning to a disc-free future, this could be essential for digitizing their game collections in time for new consoles like Project Helix.
