Xbox is spinning off four of its studios—Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions will remain independent while retaining their franchises and game catalogs. Meanwhile, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are joining new ownership with funding to develop upcoming titles.
Compulsion Games, founded in 2009 as an indie studio, states they’ll retain rights to Contrast, We Happy Few, and South of Midnight. The studio is confident they can continue creating unique games under independent management.
Double Fine Productions, known for Psychonauts and Keeper, expresses gratitude towards their time with Xbox and plans to build on their distinctive game-making culture as an independent entity.
Ninja Theory and Undead Labs will be joining new ownership structures, focusing on completing and growing their upcoming titles Senua and State of Decay 3. The exact nature of this change remains unclear for now.
For fans, it’s a mixed bag: more independence might mean more innovation but could also lead to less consistent support from a corporate giant.
