Roblox has unveiled a new feature called ‘Build’ which uses artificial intelligence to allow users to design games from their mobile devices. The feature, powered by a combination of open-source and proprietary models, enables anyone to turn simple text prompts into basic games without needing any programming experience.
The tool promises to make game development more accessible, but critics argue that it could lead to an increase in low-quality and repetitive content. Roblox has attempted to address this concern by ranking AI-generated games based on player retention.
‘Build’ will enter public alpha testing on July 28th, initially available to users aged nine and older in New Zealand who have verified their age. A free basic version is available alongside paid options.
In addition to ‘Build’, Roblox is also working on developing AI agents for playtesting and analytics support. The company has been investing heavily in AI, including an AI foundation model for generating 3D game assets and an AI chatbot to assist developers throughout the process.
The launch of ‘Build’ comes shortly after Roblox announced plans to discontinue its avatar-based video-calling feature, ‘Roblox Connect’. This move signals a focus on enhancing user experience through technology-driven innovation, rather than social networking features.
