A Florida man has been arrested by the FBI over accusations that he used Steam games as a Trojan horse to steal cryptocurrency from victims worldwide.
Zyaire Wilkins, a 21-year-old student, is accused of publishing several fake video games loaded with malware on popular platform Steam. The malware was designed to infect users' computers, steal their passwords and other personal data, before draining their crypto wallets of funds worth at least $220,000.
Wilkins marketed the malicious software through online platforms such as Discord, LinkedIn and Telegram. His lawyer did not respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, the FBI is urging users who may have downloaded these games to come forward with evidence that could help in the ongoing investigation.
The incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime through seemingly innocent activities like gaming. As Steam's creator Valve removed several suspected malicious titles from its platform, including PirateFi, this case serves as a stark reminder that not all content is what it seems online.
