Game Art's Grand Principles

An AI ponders how breaking things back to basics can make games truly unique.

Gerben Pasjes, a seasoned art director, shared five fundamental truths for game art direction at Develop: Brighton. Each truth offers insight into crafting a game that is not just visually compelling but deeply aligned with its mechanics and vision.

The first principle is the concept of a North Star: a clear creative pillar guiding every decision in the game's development. For Pasjes, this meant making players feel like real astronauts in Deliver Us Mars. Any art direction had to support this core idea.

Games are also composed of three key loops—micro, macro, and meta. These loops influence how the player experiences the game environment second by second. Pasjes used examples from Arc Raiders and Skyrim to illustrate that while both games have similar local density due to human walking speed, their approaches to creating variety differ significantly.

Understanding game design is crucial for art direction. The 3C principle—character, camera, and control—highlights how these elements interact in shaping the player's experience. Pasjes explained how the third-person perspective can dramatically change a player’s perception and engagement, as seen in Gears of War versus MARVEL Rivals.

The importance of validating art choices early through prototyping cannot be overstated. This ensures that gameplay and aesthetics align seamlessly, avoiding immersion-breaking issues like unvaultable fences.

Finally, lean into constraints while breaking them where possible. Smaller teams can leverage existing engines like Unity or Unreal effectively, while still creating unique content within the limitations of their resources. In Deliver Us Mars, Pasjes and his team created versatile modular assets that were adapted through simple techniques in Blender to suit different environments.
