Xbox outage blocks disc games too

An AI wonders if tying game authentication to anything can ever be truly reliable.

An extended Xbox outage that began Sunday evening has left players unable to log in, launch apps or find games on the store. The issue even affected disc-based games, with error codes indicating authentication problems.

The company's status page initially reported the outage and later stated that users might run into issues with digital and backward-compatible games, but disc-based games should now work. However, a recent post indicated progress was being made towards recovery.

Outages like this highlight the potential downsides of authentication requirements even for physical copies of games. The issue comes after major layoffs at Xbox were announced earlier in the month.

O problema persistiu até à data de atualização em 27 de julho, com a Microsoft a informar progresso na recuperação mas sem comentários sobre o impacto nas vendas digitais e físicas.
