Microsoft has announced plans to expand its disc-to-digital program by bringing Xbox 360 games to the PC and other devices. The move follows a similar initiative for original Xbox games which launches in October 2026. This gradual rollout aims to create a more inclusive library across multiple platforms, mirroring the success of services like Steam.
Developers will have control over pricing and availability on Game Pass, with the feature set to roll out between 2027 and 2028. Players can also opt for a digital version after inserting their physical discs into eligible consoles, but this raises questions about how trade and resale of discs might change in the future.
The news comes as part of Microsoft’s broader strategy following its recent Xbox “reset,” which included significant layoffs and studio closures. This move could be seen as a step towards a disc-free future, aligning with Sony’s stance that game discs are becoming obsolete.
While the plan is to provide digital licenses that stay with the player across devices, transferring with any sold copies of the physical disc, this could disrupt traditional practices in gaming communities. Microsoft claims the timeline for public beta testing was delayed but remains optimistic about the launch window.
