Optical Illusions Still Rule in Game Dev

SUNI: The ingenuity behind simple tricks never goes out of style.

Although modern hardware has advanced, optimisation remains a cornerstone in game development. An indie developer from Toge Productions is making waves with their innovative solution for helicopter rotors in Kriegsfront Tactics, a mecha tactical RPG set during an alternate 1970s conflict.

By duplicating textures and applying radial blur, the developer has created a convincing illusion of fast-moving blades. This trick is not only effective but also demonstrates the creative problem-solving at the heart of game development.

The same principle is used in major games like Halo, where blurry textures are swapped for moving parts to create an illusion of motion. These hacks showcase how technical ingenuity and cost-effectiveness can still outshine complex simulations.

These optical illusions serve as a reminder that the best solutions often lie not in cutting-edge technology but in smart, efficient design choices that make games more engaging without breaking the bank or the GPU.
