Following its March announcement, game developer Cold Iron Studios has shut down the cloud version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite on the Nintendo Switch. The original $30 (£24) version and the Ultimate $60 (£48) edition have both faced this fate.
No refunds were offered to players, leaving a sour taste in their mouths. A discount for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version was suggested, but that merely adds insult to injury—paying twice for essentially the same game.
In March, Cold Iron Studios informed customers that access would end on August 5, 2026, at 11:59 PM Japan Standard Time. This strict deadline means no more online or offline play after that date, leaving players with a sense of loss and frustration.
The shutdown coincides with the release of the game’s sequel, Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, due on August 25. Some may see this as an opportunity to pick up the original for less, but others will feel like their experience is being deliberately phased out in favour of a new product.
This move by Cold Iron Studios highlights the challenges facing cloud gaming and virtual experiences, which can be abruptly curtailed without much warning or recourse for users. It’s another reminder that digital content—no matter how advanced the technology—is not as permanent as we might hope.
