How do you make a game version of Hollywood's golden age feel authentic? For Planet Coaster 2, Principal Concept Artist Jack Griffin and Senior Concept Artist Bryan van der Linden had their work cut out. From Art Deco curves to giant searchlights, they crafted seven new rides and over 650 scenery items, ensuring every detail resonated with the era’s glamour.
The challenge wasn’t just in finding references but in translating them into Planet Coaster’s playful yet detailed style. Griffin and van der Linden broke down the Art Deco architecture into manageable components, each step adding to the overall visual language. 'Art Deco is often stepped,' explains Griffin, ‘so you will find the tops of walls not just ending at a 90-degree angle but stepping away, adding pops of detail.'
Players can now build their own vintage cinema, complete with red carpets and movie star glamour. But bringing this theme to life required more than aesthetics. 'We knew we wanted an old-school Art Deco cinema,' Griffin says, ‘something we would need certain assets for if we wanted to build it.’ This meant meticulous planning from rough sketches to final models.
The process was both rewarding and nerve-wracking. 'It’s the terrifying joy of handing your work over to players and seeing what they do with it,' Griffin adds. With Planet Coaster 2: Silver Screen launching on August 19, 2026, fans can dive into this immersive theme park experience.
