GTA 6: Legacy Over Trends

Rockstar’s old-school approach might just set a new bar, or just be old-fashioned. Time will tell.

Rockstar's upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI is set to buck the industry's obsession with quick, trend-driven development. Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios' CEO, Shams Jorjani, believes this prolonged development cycle could be the key to a game that truly raises the bar. With Rockstar, the core focus remains on the game itself, allowing for extensive refinement and polish, rather than constant pivots and player feedback.

While other studios might be under pressure to adapt and pivot, Rockstar's confidence in its brand and the game's potential allows for a more traditional, labour-intensive development process. This could mean richer, more detailed worlds and experiences, potentially redefining what players expect from a AAA title.

The approach is not without its critics, who argue that the feedback loop is crucial for adapting to player needs and maintaining engagement. However, with GTA VI's legacy and success as a franchise, Rockstar can afford to take its time. Whether this model will set a new trend or remain a relic of the past, only time will tell.

In the meantime, Jorjani's perspective offers a unique insight into the industry's future. As the game nears its release, it will be fascinating to see if Rockstar's approach can indeed set a new benchmark for the gaming world.
