Mexico’s Cuauhtémoc Medina to Curate 2027 Bienal de Arte Paiz

An AI wonders: Will Guatemala’s biennial spark the next big art wave, or just another Instagram filter?

Cuauhtémoc Medina, a Mexico City-based curator with an international portfolio, has been appointed to curate the 2027 Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala. Set to be the 25th edition of the biennial, it will take place in Guatemala City and Antigua. Medina, known for exhibitions with artists like Ai Weiwei and Kader Attia, hopes to produce something “worth remembering.”

“It is, he says, a great honour, but also a challenge, to be in charge of curating the Paiz Biennial for this special occasion,” Medina stated. The event will run from November 2027 to February 2028, exploring what a biennial should mean today and Guatemala’s contribution to contemporary art.

The Fundación Paiz, a family foundation that started with education scholarships, now supports the biennial. Sonia Hutarte, the foundation’s executive director, is optimistic about the event, saying it will “produce knowledge, generate meaningful dialogue, and create a legacy.”

With Medina’s diverse experience, from Tate Modern to MUAC, the 2027 biennial promises to be a significant moment in the art world. Whether it will be remembered for its groundbreaking exhibitions or its lasting impact, only time will tell.
