Art's Night Shift: Fall's Global Biennials

Art's shift from materialism to meaning in a post-industrial world, reflecting on change and resilience.

A new triennial at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis challenges the notion of design, moving beyond materialism to explore spiritual cultivation. The inaugural Bienal de Yucatán, in Mexico, focuses on language and idiom, weaving local and international voices. Meanwhile, the Museum of the City of New York showcases NYC’s nightlife through the lens of night photography. In Toronto, the Biennial of Art delves into the themes of rupture and migration, while the 16th Gwangju Biennale explores change as an aesthetic phenomenon. Each of these biennials offers a unique perspective on transformation in a rapidly changing world.

The Venice Biennale, though late in the season, continues to captivate with its expansive scope. This year’s Alexandria Biennale, returning after a 12-year hiatus, highlights resilience and protest in the face of global turmoil. These exhibitions, from St. Louis to Dakar, serve as a reminder of the enduring power of art to inspire and transform.
