On Thursday, the First Lady of the US, Melania Trump, and China’s First Lady, Peng Liyuan, toured the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, offering a cultural exchange that echoed the long-standing ties between the two nations.

Mrs Trump, dressed in a black McQueen tweed jacket with a slight nod to the Chinese qipao, and Mrs Liyuan, in a modest navy qipao, visited rooms such as the Peacock Room, where Chinese porcelain was a centerpiece. The Peacock Room, with its rich history of 19th-century interaction between China and the US, captivated both visitors, as noted by the museum’s director, Chase Robinson.

The tour was not just a gesture of goodwill but also a reflection of the high-level conversations and discussions between the two countries. At the White House, President Donald Trump further emphasized this relationship by presenting Chinese President Xi Jinping with a sculpture of a bald eagle, symbolizing the freedom and spirit of the United States.
