Gary A. Lippincott takes us on a tour of his inspiring home art studio, located above his garage in Petersham, Massachusetts. Surrounded by an oddball cast of characters and shelves of reference books, his studio is a testament to his delicate, highly detailed watercolours, which have been featured in books, galleries and collections worldwide.

The studio’s tiny wood stove keeps him warm in the winter, while the large windows offer a wealth of natural light. His art supplies, including Windsor & Newton professional-grade watercolour paints, are neatly arranged in a bright orange fishing tackle box. The technique he uses depends on the texture of the material he is trying to capture, often employing a combination of wet on wet and wet on dry techniques.

When not painting, Gary works on sculpting and carving puppets. He has his son-in-law’s camera set up to capture time lapses of the painting process, and he enjoys the whimsical, fairy-like voice of Tori Amos and the earthy tones of Fiona Apple while he works. Playing his Yamaha piano and enjoying a glass of red wine help him unwind, but for Gary, his best commute is a short walk from his house to his studio, where he says he has the best ‘work’ ever.
