A US Congressman has called on the Smithsonian to document Donald Trump’s alleged “narcissistic self-worship” through a proposed bill that would see items related to the former president's presidency preserved and exhibited.
Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland has introduced the “Preserving and Remembering the History of Trump and other Tyrants Act” which directs the Smithsonian to collect artifacts reflecting the rise of governmental propaganda, corruption, and authoritarianism under Trump's terms, for a permanent display at the National Museum of American History.
Items proposed include artifacts and ephemera related to Executive Order 14416, which required content warning signs outside the museum, and banners with Trump's portrait installed on federal buildings. The bill also covers other related objects, communications, and testimonials deemed historically relevant.
“To avoid repeating this descent into authoritarianism, we must study this corrupt President’s actions and allow the public to learn about the numerous tools he deployed while attempting to remake American history in his own image and according to his own autocratic and white nationalist beliefs,” said Raskin in a press statement.
