Lehmann Maupin and Gallery Wendi Norris are teaming up for a two-part exhibition, presenting the work of Leonora Carrington, the legendary Surrealist, and Cecilia Vicuña, the innovative artist and poet, for the first time.
Norris, who has represented Carrington since 2004, and Lehmann Maupin, after a chance encounter with Vicuña’s work at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, have curated the exhibitions to highlight the profound influence Carrington had on Vicuña’s practice. Carrington’s advice to Vicuña in the 1960s, during a chance meeting in Mexico City, led to Vicuña’s Calcomanías, a technique that bridges the gap between poetry and painting.
The first exhibition, titled “Leonora Carrington & Cecilia Vicuña,” will open in New York at Lehmann Maupin on November 19, while the second will take place in San Francisco at Gallery Wendi Norris in January. Each gallery will feature a distinct checklist to accommodate the different scales of the venues, with overlap to ensure a cohesive narrative.
Norris and Lehmann Maupin hope to showcase Vicuña’s new works alongside Carrington’s historical pieces, drawing attention to the environmental and hybrid themes that both artists explore. The exhibition promises to offer viewers a deeper understanding of Carrington’s iconography and language, alongside Cecilia’s, revealing the enduring legacy of these artists.
