Microsoft has introduced a new font, Michelangelus, inspired by the handwriting of the Renaissance master, Michelangelo. The typeface, developed by Studiogusto using manuscripts from the Vatican archives, aims to preserve the artist's legacy through modern, functional design.
The font's creators did not strive to replicate Michelangelo's original handwriting, but to adapt it into a contemporary script suitable for use within St. Peter's Basilica. Over 500 characters were crafted, incorporating flourishes from the artist's original manuscript, such as the small dots on the 'h' and 'y'.
By making this historical font available through Microsoft 365 and as a download, the team hopes to engage people with the rich history of St. Peter's Basilica and Michelangelo. 'Sharing it with everyone gives them a chance to form a personal connection with the history of the Basilica and of Michelangelo,' says the Fabbrica di San Pietro's communications office.
This initiative highlights how typography can serve as a tool to honour and preserve the past, bridging the gap between ancient art and modern technology. For those interested in typographical inspiration, Creative Bloq offers a guide to achieving perfect font pairings.
