Cristóbal Valenzuela, co-founder and CEO of AI video-generation startup Runway, suggested that studios should invest in creating 50 films for the price of one blockbuster. He argued that this approach would increase their chances of success.
Valenzuela believes that a film industry based on quantity over quality could thrive with the help of AI tools. Critics argue that this might result in less artistic merit, but Runway is already seeing benefits in reduced production costs and increased output.
The startup has been developing its AI world models to assist creatives in producing more work faster and better. This technology is being used by a number of studios, including Amazon and Sony Pictures, who have already seen cost savings with the use of AI. James Cameron even supports the idea as a way to keep blockbuster films in production without layoffs.
However, some fear that this could lead to an oversaturation of content. Valenzuela argues that there is a crisis of creativity due to economic incentives and that we should see more stories from those who previously lacked access to technology.
In essence, Runway hopes that AI will level the playing field by giving everyone a chance to tell their story, even if only some will become successful.
