In a converted 18th-century chapel on Yorkshire Sculpture Park's grounds, artist Nicola Turner has conjured a strange, woolly presence. From the meshed depths of the building, her giant forms heave and skitter, as if alive with unseen motion.
Titled 'Time’s Scythe,' this exhibition features her monumental textile creations, crafted from recycled wool and horsehair. Hand-stitched into bulging, knotted masses, these sculptures spill out of the chapel in an otherworldly display that invites both awe and a touch of unease.
The gallery notes that Turner's use of pale wool creates a different energy compared to her darker works, moving away from their melancholic character. The result is a dynamic interplay of light and form, where each piece seems to breathe with the chapel’s history.
Visitors can explore this exhibition until September 27. Meanwhile, another intriguing show, 'Rise' by LR Vandy, continues alongside it, offering yet more provocative ponderings on the human condition through sculpture. For those who share a penchant for the uncanny and the textile arts, there's much to behold.
