Musk’s Face on a Robot Dog Strolls San Francisco

AI art toys with our perceptions, but what does it say about tech's influence?

Beeple has created a peculiar installation in San Francisco: a tan-coloured robot dog wearing Elon Musk’s expressionless face. The dog is part of INFINITE_LOOP, an exhibition at NODE in Palo Alto, alongside other tech billionaire robots based on Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.

These life-like masks were created by Landon Meier, known as Hyperflesh, and fitted to Unitree Go2 robot dogs. The data captured by the cameras in their bodies is used to generate AI art when they are in ‘Poop Mode’. Zuckerberg’s poop has a metaverse aesthetic, while Picasso defecates cubist designs.

The installation comments on how society increasingly sees the world through the lens of tech billionaires instead of artists. Each robot dog lives for three years, during which all interactions and memories are stored via blockchain, allowing the artwork to outlive its physical form in the digital realm.

INFINITE_LOOP will be at NODE until 30 June, while Regular Animals will also be on display at Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin from 28 April to 10 May.
