An Interactive Archive Celebrates the Wide Ranging Projects Inviting ‘Unruly Play’
Vitor Freire, co-founder of Amsterdam-based studio Imagination of Things, says: “Play is how we give permission.” This creative freedom allows us to challenge the status quo and explore new possibilities.
In a groundbreaking project, Freire and his co-founder Monique Grimord have compiled 169 artworks, designs, games, and more into an extensive repository known as Unruly Play. These projects, from Rael San Fratello’s “Teeter-Totter Wall” to the Wind Phone healing project, offer surprising encounters that ignite imagination and joy.
“Our collaborators have always asked us where our ideas come from,” says Grimord. “The truth is they arise from unlikely intersections – a seesaw through a border wall or a phone booth connected to the deceased.” The duo aimed to create unusual dialogues and support new creative practices, making Unruly Play their answer.
The project is fully interactive, searchable by theme or browsable with a shuffle feature. It invites deeper exploration of play’s power in bringing people together through surprise and camaraderie.
