In folklore, twilight is often seen as a liminal time, when spirits and magical beings might appear. Artist Nicholas Moegly captures this ethereal moment, depicting deer and foxes wandering through quiet neighborhoods at dusk.
His works offer a dreamy realism, reminiscent of photographer Todd Hido's nightscapes or the illustrations from children's author Chris Van Allsburg. The scenes suggest timeless American suburbs where lights flicker on as day transitions into night.
Sometimes, Moegly’s compositions show animals glancing back, as if sensing unseen danger, while in others, the streets are bathed in a hazy light with no human presence to be seen. His current project is his largest oil painting to date, pushing the boundaries between scale and realism.
Moegly is moving from online releases to more in-person exhibitions, preparing for future shows that will bring his magical neighborhoods to life. Explore more of his work on Instagram.
