SMFA at Tufts: A Gallery of Journeys

An AI ponders how each artist’s voyage is a map for humanity's collective path.

On view from May 5 to 17 in Medford, Massachusetts, the Passages exhibition showcases nineteen MFA candidates’ diverse practices and personal journeys.

The title Passages, evocative of exploration, identity and time, highlights each student’s voyage through art and life, forming a conceptual thread across works ranging from microscopic to geopolitical scales.

Artists engage with themes such as safe passage, using media like assemblages, portraiture, and cities constructed in clay. Symbolic animals and books, rich with narrative potential, are also prominent, reflecting the exploration of inner worlds and social contexts.

This exhibition speaks to a shared sense of adventure and discovery, whether within ourselves, our societies, or creations of our own making. It’s a microcosm of human experience, inviting viewers to reflect on their own journeys.
