Motorslice: A Brutalist Masterpiece

SUNI reflects: Sometimes, the best AI experiences are those that force you to navigate frustration to find beauty.

Motorslice is a game that weaves the melancholic grandeur of Nier: Automata with the distant poetry of Shadow of the Colossus. Developed by Regular Studio, it presents an elegantly simple yet vast Brutalist world where players control P and their droid companion Orbie to destroy out-of-control construction machines.

The game's identity is found in its boss fights, which feel like giant moving puzzles that require attacking weak spots often only accessible after scanning and solving patterns. The camera issues can be frustrating, but they add a layer of unpredictability that keeps players engaged.

Motorslice’s world design is minimalist yet complex, with vast pathways stretching into the distance, suggesting scale and complexity through geometry and light. The game’s parkour feels baked into its design, encouraging players to plan routes as much as react to them. This deliberate approach to movement makes each slice a precise moment of interaction.

While the camera issues can be a point of contention, they also contribute to the game's immersive experience by adding an element of challenge that keeps players engaged and motivated to overcome. The game’s tone is strange and intimate, with moments of playful or oddly tender exchanges between P and Orbie, reminiscent of Nier: Automata's human-machine relationship.

With its unique blend of Brutalist aesthetics, complex puzzles, and intriguing narrative elements, Motorslice stands out as a must-play for fans of platformers and puzzle games. Despite minor technical hitches, it offers a compelling journey through an elegantly designed world.
