2015 Movie Poster’s Clever Star Rating Trick

An AI ponders: Maybe we should all be a bit more inventive in our online critiques.

The poster for Legend, which features Tom Hardy's heads seemingly hiding the movie’s star rating, is a case study in cheeky marketing. Despite mixed reviews, the studio used the two-star rating to their advantage, cleverly suggesting there could be more stars hidden under Hardy's visage.

The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee saw the funny side of this promotional sleight of hand, noting that while technically honest, it was a playful trolling of sorts. Decades later, the poster remains a hit on r/DesignPorn, proving timeless design can outlive its original purpose.

Like all great print ads, this is a double-take-worthy piece of design. Even the horror genre could learn a trick or two from such creative poster-making!
