Charli XCX’s New Single Strips It Back

Minimalist design shows a shift away from BRAT's anti-design aesthetic in an unexpected way.

British singer Charli XCX has released a minimalist new single cover, marking a stark departure from her previous anti-design aesthetic.

A far cry from the undone look of her 2024 album BRAT, which dominated internet culture with its unpolished design, this latest release is a textbook example of minimalism. The plain white background and smart serif font for the title 'Rock Music' are in direct contrast to the hyperpop playfulness that once defined her visual identity.

The change in aesthetic has polarized fans, with some lauding its clean lines while others question whether it feels like a satirical take on past work. The accompanying video, filled with brooding imagery of guitars and cigarettes, only adds to the sense of a significant artistic shift.
