Our Verdict
Mixtape expertly captures the joys of youth, where creative flights of fancy turn the mundane into surreal. Its eclectic soundtrack and handmade aesthetic make it a loving ode to an analogue past that’s still within reach.
With its textured hand-made style, indie studio Beethoven & Dinosaur eschews photorealism for a fitting tribute to pre-internet joys—be it Polaroids documenting house parties or mixtapes for any occasion. The modern touch of painterly characters and stepped animation feels reminiscent of the post-Spider-Verse era.
While the story is simple, with three teenage friends seeking out alcohol for a school party while reminiscing about their misadventures, every frame exudes intent and craft. From hand-animated lip syncs to synced claps with the opening track 'Feel Good' by Devo, each moment feels extraordinary.
Yet, as with any mixtape, not everything hits its mark perfectly. Some scenes feel more meandering than others, but the game’s raw, goofy teenagers resonate in a way that transcends high school movie tropes. It’s easy to hit play and revisit those heartfelt moments even if you’re just skipping to your favourites.
