Mary Frank's sculptures and works on paper celebrate self-reliant, tender women who defy traditional narratives.
She carved her subjects from wood, ceramic and bronzed them into enduring forms; even small pieces like 'Entrance' (1975) and 'Embracing Couple' (c. 1980) pack a punch with delicate yet firm lines depicting almost exclusively women in Edenic idylls.
In her ceramic piece, 'Dawn' (1975), Frank presents a woman’s head profiled twice - as if each layer of identity is a separate entity within. This dual-layered sculpture suggests the complexity and depth of human experience that goes beyond simple surface appearances.
Curated by Steven Harvey at Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, her exhibition continues until May 22nd. It’s an opportunity to witness Frank's unique vision that blends myth with reality, offering a compelling narrative of female resilience.
