Manhattan's Neue Galerie will merge with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2028, creating an unprecedented collection of Austrian and German art. The merger, initiated by cosmetics billionaire Ronald Lauder, aims to preserve the legacy of the Neue Galerie while retaining its independent identity.
The Neue Galerie boasts a star-studded collection including Gustav Klimt's iconic Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, alongside works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Lauder, known for his political donations, has gifted the museum with significant collections and endowments.
This merger comes nearly eight decades after The Met's last major absorption, making it a unique case in museum history. Unlike past mergers, the Neue Galerie will maintain its physical space and staffed operations within the combined institution.
The Lauder family has pledged to donate 13 additional paintings, including works by Klimt and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and make an undisclosed endowment gift for the museum's long-term care. The move is seen as a blend of art and philanthropy in the modern era.
